The celebrated master of the modernist movement Mies Van Der Rohe was the pioneer of sky-scraper architecture as can be seen in any modern city with glass and steel architecture. Following the direct design philosophy of "driving to the essence of things", his furniture designs were approached with a structural eye of a detail oriented designer.
His furniture designs are akin to Architecture in Miniature; exercises in structure and materials that achieve visual harmony. These pieces thrive not only in relation to the interiors for which they were designed, but became almost instant modern classics.
As his career progressed his stark modern style became more and more basic while attaining discipline, purity and clarity. Nonbelievers viewed his buildings as grim and void, lacking color, texture, warmth or joy.
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe was born Ludwig Mies in Aachen Germany. Later in life he added his mother's maiden name, Van Der Rohe. As a young boy in Germany he apprenticed in the field of stonemasonry with his father. With no formal education in architecture, young Meis moved to Berlin and befriended other great minds: le Corbusier, Gropius, and Behrens. In 1930, he superseded Gropius as director at the Bauhaus until it's demise at the hands of the Nazis in 1937. He moved to the Chicago in the Untited States and continued exploration of the ideal of the international style thru such notable projects as the Institute of Technology, Segramm Building, and the apartments on Lake Shore Dr. |
