Alessandro Mendini's work as a designer, author, artist and architect, blending design theory and journalistic elements. In 1974, Mendini brought together his views on the intellectual and associative substance of furniture in a series called "Mini Monuments to Spiritual Use", which included the Lassu and the Sedia Spaziale. As editor-chief of the "Casebella" magazine from 1970-1975, he drafted some of this series as title-page designs.
In 1975 in a happening outside the editorial offices of "Casabella" Mendini burnt a Lassu chair to to emphasize the ritual character of the object. Lassu was completely enthroned on a conical base and thus Sedia Spaziale constitutes a domesticated version of it. Mendini explains the idea behind the Sedia Spaziale as follows: "The cosmic character of these objects is derived from the appearance of satellites, with their broad bases, the way they mirror what is below them, the disproportional elements and the impression of weightlessness".
Both these models are available here at Miniature Chairs. As always, Vitra Miniatures come in the little wooden packing crate. 1:6 scale. |
