The Barcelona Chair made it's debut at the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona, Spain, designed for the king and queen of Spain to use during the exhibition. The clean aesthetics of the German Pavilion (also a Van Der Rohe design) was the perfect backdrop for this sculptural shape of this beautiful chair.
For inspiration, Mies van der Rohe used the ancient scissors-shaped collapsible folding chair, the sella cirulis, which was a symbol of power among Egyptian rulers. A fresh interpretation combines the symbolism of the lines with this sexy cyma recta curve. This amazing miniature classic made by the Vitra Design Museum is reproduced in painstaking detail At 6:1 scale. It is perfectly presented in it's wooden packing crate. The MR 90 Barcelona Chair is made with steel strip frame, leather belts, and lush black leather cushions.
The authentic Vitra Miniature always comes in the little wooden packing box from the Vitra Design Museum Collection. |
