The Eames took full responsibility for the full process involved in their designs, and the production of this chair is a great example. They combined their knowledge of formal and technical innovation habitually developing the necessary production technology that would be required of each new design. The Eames used their Plywood Group of 1945 to development of their technique for producing three-dimensional plywood forms. The DCW has a 5-ply seat and back, and added strength 8-ply in the legs with legs and spine made from natural face veneers and maple inner plies.
The modest DCW has come to represent the best in all that is modern design, comfortable, practical and economically restrained. Boldly innovative breakthrough when it was introduced in 1945, and remains a sucessful Herman Miller product ever since.
The Natural color is discontinued and no longer available. Lucky are they who got them while they could!
The authentic Vitra Miniature always comes in the little wooden packing box from the Vitra Design Museum Collection. |
