Inspired by the construction of wicker baskets, Frank Gehry worked with Knoll to create a line of furniture which could be produced in a serial manner. He worked with elastic strips of laminated wood and wove them together to create light-weight constructions. Surprisingly voluminous forms with three-dimensional curves resulted and the construction gave a comfortable cushioning effect for the sitter. The strips reduced the weight of the chair and the amount of wood needed. This fit in well with Gehry's goal; to designing the Bentwood Collection which would be practical furniture for mass production, and inexpensive to manufacture."Rolf's Chair" derived its name from Swiss furniture entrepreneur Rolf Fehlbaum who was also the patron for the Vitra Design Museum in 1989 and the Vitra Center in Basel in 1992, both Gehry designs 17.7 x 8.7 x 10.0 cm / Maple Plywood
