Clean simple design aesthetic interpreted through thoughtful engineering was a hallmark of the Eames style, and these dining side chairs are one of the happy results. This single shell design was a breakthrough in the commercial use of fiberglass plastic for commercial use.

Rumor has it that the Eames were inspired for this chair after playing around with fiberglass cloth and plastic resin that they found in a military-surplus shop. They eventually progressed towards the more environmentally friendly high-impact plastic used in the production of the chairs today.

"In architecture as in furniture design and pick-a-stick the problem are the joints..." (Charles Eames) In the DSR for the first time different colored shells could be mounted on various metal bases using hard rubber discs known as shockmounts. One of the most commercially successful designs from the period, this chair has an ubiquitous poise, once again attesting the determination of good design. This Vitra Design Museum original is reproduced in painstaking detail at 6:1 scale. It is brand new and perfect in it's wooden packing crate.

This model is made of plastic with the 'Eiffel-Tower' base in black metal and rubber shockmounts.

Splendid!
